How to choose the right statistical test?

The major purposes of statistics are to help us understand and describe phenomena in our world and to help us draw reliable conclusions about those phenomena. Yet, for want of exposure to statistical theory and practice, it continues to be regarded as the Achilles heel by all concerned in the loop of research and publication. There are many different types of statistical analysis. Choosing the correct analytical approach for your situation can be a daunting process. Knowing what type of project you have and what sort of data you will collect can be useful in working your way towards the most appropriate statistical approach. With the widespread availability of powerful and at the same time user friendly statistical software, a few fundamental considerations for selecting appropriate statistical test will lead one towards success. This discursive lecture would address on the key principles for selecting the most appropriate statistical test based on the research question and appropriate research design, which is crucial to obtain valid and generalizable results from the research study.
